| Yesterday afternoon I was home for lunch. I was
flipping the channels on the television when I ran by MSNBC. I found it
strange that they were showing a soccer game. Apparently, the Olympic Games
began before the opening ceremonies. I was shocked at who was playing:
Portugal (no big surprise) vs. Iraq (huge surprise). I remember reading an
article a while back about how Iraqis did not want to participate in the
Olympics because if they did not win they were either tortured or killed.
This is the first time in a very long time that Iraq has been able to be in
the Olympics without fear of their own lives. This has to be the main story of the Olympics. How can it not be? However, after I scanned the channels looking for this story I could not find it. It is not being discussed. Is it that the media does not want the world to realize that the Iraqi War was a good thing? Is it that they are trying to shield the world from the good that is happening in Iraq instead of the bad? I will watch the Olympics this year - maybe more than in the past. I of course will be cheering for USA because I am an American. I of course will be cheering for Brasil because Francine is Brasilian. This year I will also be cheering for Iraq because the people of Iraq are experiencing something they never had before - Freedom. |
